AMVIC:

What is AMVIC?

On September 1, 1999, the Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council (AMVIC) assumed responsibility from the provincial government for administering and enforcing automotive industry regulations under Alberta's Fair Trading Act. The Fair Trading Act, which came into effect September 1, 1999, includes an Automotive Business Regulation that pertains specifically to the motor vehicle industry and the authority under which AMVIC operates.

What does this mean for you, the buyer?

AMVIC promotes the following basic principles:

1. Truth in selling

  • be HONEST in serving customers
  • ACCURATELY represent the product
  • avoid FALSE and MISLEADING advertising

2. Full Disclosure

  • ensure communications about offered vehicles or services are not deceptive
  • use honest sales promotions
  • reject high-pressure sales practices
  • DISCLOSE ALL KNOWN RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE VEHICLE OR SERVICE

3. Level Playing Field

  • offer products that are FIT and SAFE for their intended use
  • be TRUTHFUL and CONSULTATIVE in the sales process
  • don't use coercion in the sale process

4. Due Diligence
  • take all reasonable cautions to prevent possible misrepresentations
  • exercise care and prudence in business dealings
  • discharge your obligations, financial and otherwise in good faith

In simple terms "TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WOULD WANT TO BE TREATED". The days of the "used car salesman and the old tactics" are numbered. No longer are "Buyer Beware" sales acceptable to the consumer and no longer can the seller hide behind the 2 little words "AS IS". Today you have a choice of who you can choose to deal with, an TRUTHFUL and CONSULTATIVE AMVIC licensed dealer or one of the other dealers.

These principles have been instituted in Ontario for over 4 years and in the next couple of years will be the standard implemented across Canada. British Columbia recently implemented these standards on April 1, 2004. Is the importer, you are buying from, part of this organization? If not, WHY NOT?
