LATEST SCAM BY SOME IMPORTERS...

...trying to pressure would be customers in "panic purchasing" units by using the rumour that Canada is going to a 25 year ruling, similar to the United States and Australia. What this would mean to the purchaser and the importer is the units sold in Japan could not be imported till they were 25 years old to the month. Right now Canada is working with a 15 year rule. This is just that, a rumour.

I talked with Nezi in Ottawa about this specific threat and there is NOTHING in the works that would cause this to be true. We have heard rumours of this change for almost 10 years now, there is no reason to panic into purchasing a JDM unless you are in the position to do so.

If you hear of this threatening rumour from your importer then walk away, he is misinformed or blatantly trying to pressure you into a purchase.

We at Luxury Imports have personally, have owned, driven and WHEELED almost every type of Land Cruiser that has landed on North American soil. In addition, we have worked on Land Cruisers for over 25 years. It is no wonder that our customers feel completely informed and satisfied with their purchases, and this is reflected in our numerous testinomials

Luxury Imports is not threatened by the upsurge of "curbers" in the recent months. Anyone that buys from these potentially illegal sources must be aware of the consequences. If a deal seems to good to be true, it probably is. This also goes for the "new" import companies that are springing up all over Canada.

The biggest defense against getting "burned" is to ask plenty of questions. If you feel you have received contradictory answers then move on. You are investing a large amount of your hard earned money to get the vehicle you want or need, do not let yourself be frustrated or disappointed in the end.

We have every vehicle inspected for potential deficiencies a minimum of two times, first in Japan and again once the vehicles has is landed in Calgary, Alberta. All problems are corrected or dealt with before the vehicle is turned over to the customer. We educate and inform our customers how to make their "new" unit last much longer. As an additional service, we are able to source the sometimes difficult-to-find parts that the JDM units occasionally require. We can usually supply these parts within seven days.

In choosing an importer ask if they do the following?:

  • Load test the batteries and replace if found to be lacking? If they are replaced are premium brands used?
  • Check the tires for wear and replace with brand new if under 60% wear remaining?
  • Change out the Big End Bearings on the HZJ (HZJ73,77) HDT (HDJ81) as a precaution against the dreaded BEB failure that can cost in excess of $6500 to fix.
  • Change out all of the fluids front to back?
  • Change out the timing belts if not changed in Japan?
  • Confirm the actual mileage of the units? Are you allowed to see the auction sheet to see the mileage report (if there is a star beside the mileage it means the mileage is NOT confirmed) The grading system in Japan has become very lax in the recent years so you must exercise caution when buying from a company that sends you the auction sheet. The unit must be visually inspected before buying, once a unit is bought then it is yours you can not "send it back".
  • Install a brand new high-end stereo since the Japanese units only get 3 stations here in Alberta and most of Canada
  • Is the out of province inspection completed and the vehicle registered in Canada BEFORE you pick it up?
  • Does your importer include the hard to find chassis and engine manuals for each and every Land Cruiser he sells?
  • Inform you of any potential shortcomings of the units you are looking at purchasing? For example, If you have a family of four and two dogs, will your importer recommend a larger unit or will he sell you what he has in stock?
  • Does your importer offer to source the parts needed for the unit you are considering should you need them?
  • Does he ask you questions to help you find the unit that best fits your needs?
Finally, is the importer informed himself as to the unit he is selling? Nothing worse than asking a question and getting the impression that the importer does not know his stuff.

There are very few legally registered importers importing the JDM units. Ask to see their provincially issued license. If you buy a "problem" unit from any importer, legal or "curber", you do have recourse in most of Canada. Contact your local motor vehicle registry office for the number of your local complaints department.:
